Ok so here’s the thing. Not sure if you do this but, being in a reflective mood this morning I started to think about my life.

My original go-to was to create a list of achievements, and, for a moment it sounded ok.

But then it struck me that life is not a CV and so I went back through the list and here’s what I discovered.

The things that I am most proud of and have brought me the most joy in my life (so far. I’m not finished yet by any means) have an underlying thread. They are about bringing happiness to others.

Look. I’m no saint. Of course haven’t got it right all of the time, despite best intentions, and there are times when my desire to support others hasn’t served me (or others) in the best way. But I guess what I’m saying is that we have to be ourselves and follow our own path.

If we can have compassion for others we meet along the way, during the cosmic eye blink that we spend on this little blue planet, then our time will be well spent. Right?

So, in the hope that you’ve read this far down, thanks for your patience , today, remember to smile, laugh, connect with others, and find the little things that bring you joy, whatever they may be.

Be kind to yourself and others.

We have a lot to think about.
Social media often doesn't help. (I should add here that I sincerely hope the Way of the Tortoise is a calm sea in a storm of social media opinions, angry words, and echo chambers that only serve to create deeper divisions in society).

Where was I?

Ah yes. 'A lot to think about.' It's true. But one thing you can do to help yourself and others today is to remember that with all the plate spinning we have to do, that the simple things we overlook may be the most important.

You'll most likely look back on the career choices you're struggling to make today and wonder what all the fuss was about. In 5 or 10 years time you most likely won't remember 80% of the worries that currently keep you up at night.

If you do remember, you'll likely think, 'oh well, I got through THAT so my next challenge will be a breeze!'

The things that matter are the moments that ground you to reality and connect you to others.

So make that call to a friend today, chat to your neighbour. Tell someone you love them and appreciate them (not your neighbour necessarily, but hey, if that's how you feel say it!)

Life is short. Time is fleeting. Be grateful that you are here in this moment at this exact time and appreciate what you already have.

So yes, there is a lot to think about, but today focus on the things that matter and your journey will be a little bit more enjoyable.

Enjoy who you are.

It is said that we should aim to excel at all we do. You've probably heard the 'thousand hours of practice' idea. Well, there is certainly a time and place for directing your focus and increasing your skills at work, with people, a hobby, really anything that you might do in life.

But....

its time to let go of excellence for a moment.

If you ONLY choose to do the things you can do brilliantly you may achieve excellence, but what about feeding your passion?

Did you once have a desire to sing, play an instrument, learn to knit, swim, surf, write a book? Maybe you still do?

If so, do it. what are you waiting for?

Forget about whether you will be the best singer, knitter or writer. Do it because you want to, it feels good and when all is said and done, its the journey that counts.

So join a choir, find a guitar teacher, learn to knit. Maybe you'll sing off key, maybe you'll never write a hit song, maybe every scarfe you knit will have dropped stitches and never be worn but that doesn't matter. You matter.

Explore every aspect of what makes you, you and make no apologies. You don't have to answer to anyone. Life is for living, things are for doing, and joy is there to be discovered. Find yours today and to hell with anyone who questions you.

Don't forget that anything can be learned and enjoyed in small tortoise steps!

We can fall into the mindset that our skills, talents and achievements. They're nice to have but they don't make you more valuable.

You are complete. You are whole exactly as you are right now.

The world (or people in it) may have led you to believe that these external attributes are more important than they really are. don't listen.

Be yourself. Find your own path and create your own balance. Remember that you don't do not need to change who YOU are to fit into this world or to be worthy of love and care.

Do you over-do? I do!

If I'm really honest with myself I over think, I over plan, I tend to worry about a host of things I can do nothing about. I prioritise other peoples needs over my own, and I over explain - I'm probably doing that now!

Over-doing things can be overwhelming at times. So what's the answer? What works for me is focussing on the right things in order to find balance.

Easier said than done, but there ARE a few really simple daily techniques to help wind down, de-stress and find the balance we all need to get happy and stay happy.

Try one or all of these quick and simple techniques today:

1. Gratitude Journalling:
Pick up the pen and pad you placed on your bedside table last night (nice planning ahead, you clever sausage!) Sit up in bed and write down three or more things that you are grateful for.

It's a great way to focus your mind on positivity.

2. Mindfulness:
During a 'waiting' moment in your day. It may be in-line at a post office, at a bus stop, on hold with your utility company or bank etc. Instead of letting your mind drift, instead give your absolute focus to something you can see hear smell touch or taste.

Noticing a hum-drum aspect of your daily life and giving it all your focus will reduce your stress levels.

3. Kindness:
Do something for someone else without any expectation of anything in return. Moments of spontaneous kindness can make a huge difference to peoples lives. Research has shown that even witnessing an act of kindness can make the observer 50 times more likely to do something kind.

The ripples of kindness will emanate outwards into the world.

Make a difference to yourself and others today by focussing on these activities - instead of over-doing and over-thinking.

You could interpret this two ways. Your first reaction or to proactively take action before others do. 😊🐢why not be kindful today.

What is it? A magical combination of mindfulness, kindness and meditation. Instead of passively observing your breath, a mantra or thoughts you become actively mindful about spreading kindness.

Kindful means:

+ Looking for kindness opportunities in your life
+ Being kind in our thoughts about others
+ Being proactively kind - taking action

Why? Because kindness is catching

This could mean saying or doing something kind for someone. Instead of just thinking about helping, it's taking proactive action to make a difference.

Sometimes being kind can be fuelled by expectation. We might feel obliged to do things for others because it is expected of us. Kindfulness removes any negative connotation.

This is about you openly and honestly giving of yourself without any expectation of reward. Simply to make a difference to others and making the world a better place one kind act at a time (like a tiny tortoise step!)

Kindness has a proven ripple effect. Even witnessing an act of kindness (that you have no part in) increases the likelihood that you will be kind.

Do you feel like you’re doing your bit but other people aren’t pulling their weight? 😐 We have opportunities in life to make the decisions that benefit everyone. It might be the simple choice to smile, to be grateful, to find the positives in the most dire situations. Whatever it is, try not to compare yourself or your decisions with what is happening out there. Remember who you are and why you do what you do. ☺️ Kindness. It’s for others but also for ourselves. If we get stuck in “comparison mode” we can become distracted and bitter. This negative thought process is not helpful. 🧠 So what can you do? Get your thoughts into a journal, your phone or on a scrap of paper. The key is to gain clarity by downloading these and observing them at a slight distance. 📖 Focus on writing about what you already have in your life and what could go right. Pretty soon you’ll feel lifted and energised and feel able to carry on with your own path. That’s the one that matters. Avoid judgement of others too. Something I often have to remind myself. 😐 Do you sometimes have a feeling in your gut that things are not as they should be? I know where my anxiety comes from. It’s part of my wiring growing up and if I’m honest I have more moments with this feeling than without. But it’s something I’m working on. I use this phrase as an affirmation. These four words are incredibly powerful. Try it. ⭐️ Next time you feel anxious, stressed or upset repeat it to bring yourself back to balance. Fill your head with this positive phrase for a few minutes to block out the negative thoughts and stop them taking root. 💐 there IS nothing wrong. Say it and believe it (even if you don’t!) and you will re program and reset your mind. This will give you the best chance of having a day worth smiling about. Sounds to obvious to say it but you might have forgotten this key fact. When life gets busy we go to our default operating systems. Trouble is in some cases our defaults have usually been influenced by negative overbearing individuals who have fed us untruths. When you have a negative thought stop it in it’s tracks as soon as you can. Say out loud ‘stop’. Breathe and replace it with the 3word phrase in the beautiful flower (or choose your own empowering phrase!) sounds simple but it really works. Facing any situation with a negative outlook can send you on a downward spiral. Take control and drown out the criticism with positivity. Self-belief. We all have it, even if it’s just a tiny speck hidden right down deep within us. It’s the spark that inspires us to keep going when all we want to do is give up and give in.
